Also mentally record the best way to approach these locations without being detected. This may save you valuable minutes when faced with a true hunting situation. It is tempting during these scouting trips to call to the gobblers not only to hear the birds but to practice your calling. It is best not to educate the birds anymore than necessary. Other than a locator call as previously mentioned, leave your turkey calls and calling practice to your den at home.
Patterning your gun is another important step in preparing for spring turkey season. Try different shot sizes and powder charges that best fit your gun. There are numerous choke tubes on the market that can also improve the pattern of your gun. Shoot at different ranges starting at 20 yards and extend to approximately 40 yards. With practice and a little experimentation, you will be able to find the best load for your gun. The goal here is to put 10-20 pellets in the kill zone at the maximum distance you plan to shoot. Birds can be taken at distances greater than 40 yards depending on the hunting situation. But, your chances improve dramatically when the bird is within 40 yards.
Another step, and one that is often forgotten in preparation for the upcoming season is physical conditioning. The mountains of Eastern Tennessee and Southwest Virginia can be a challenge to hunt. Begin by walking some every other day and build your endurance until you can walk 3-4 miles at a fairly brisk pace. This exercise is not only healthy but will lend to a more enjoyable hunt. If you are physically fit going into the woods, your body may be able to go that extra mile that will help in bagging that spring time gobbler.
Wearing proper clothing is also very important in preparing for spring turkey season. Most camouflage patterns work well, but the ability to sit motionless and comfortable for long periods of time increases your chances of being successful in the spring time woods. Also, pick a boot that is comfortable and preferably waterproof & snake proof. Several snake proof boots are available that provide snake protection just below the knee. These boots are comfortable and waterproof with lug soles for solid footing.
All of the previous mentioned preparations for spring turkey hunting lead to the final and most important step, THINK SAFETY.
You must mentally prepare for identifying your target with 100% accuracy, never shooting toward a sound and if possible knowing where other hunters are located within your hunting area. You may become an excellent caller, have the best equipment, be in great physical condition and your gun patterned perfectly. But, once the shot is made it cannot be pulled back.
